Hello and welcome to the Rested and Rich Real Estate Agent . As you may have noticed , I'm modifying the name of this podcast a bit and adding in the word rich . You may be wondering why . If you know me at all , then you know that this decision doesn't pertain to just money , but really to the richness in all areas of our lives . And I'm also asking the question really , what does rich mean to you ?

Speaker 1

Many of you may be familiar with Ramit Sethi . He's a financial coach . He published a book several years ago called I Will Teach you to Be Rich . I think had a blog with a similar name and talks a lot

Introduction to the Rested and Rich Podcast

Speaker 1

and has a Netflix series as well . Anyway , he says a rich life is what it is that's important to you , and , of course , that involves money , because we live in a society that takes money to survive . We don't live in a barter-only society . So rich and what that means to you is the direction this podcast is heading in . But beyond that , I want to explore what richness looks like to you .

Speaker 1

The word rich can be a loaded one , and it can bring up a lot of different thoughts and feelings for many of us , and so that's what I want to take a couple minutes to talk through what rich means to me in the context , in how I'm using it in this podcast . Especially in our industry , there's images of financially rich real estate agents flaunting showy cars , designer shoes and bags splashed all over reality TV , social media , luxury marketing packages , etc . Which not only leaves the consumer maybe feeling a little bit icky about what real estate agents do with their commission , how they spend it , but often leaves many of us in the industry feeling like there's this constant need to keep up with what the flashier agents out there on social media are doing . So I think it's important to define what does rich mean to you ? And it's the same question I sat with when I thought about modifying the name of this podcast . So I'd like you to notice that when you spend money and exchange it for goods and services , there's an exchange of value , but there's also an exchange of energy as well .

Speaker 1

Sometimes giving our money to others feels good , like charitable contributions , buying something nice for someone you love , and it feels solid and joyful and you feel certain in the money that you spent in exchange for the product or services you got . Other times , our money spending is neutral right , we don't really care one way or the other and we just move on with our day . And , of course , other times , spending money feels terrible , like when you have to pay a parking fine or a late fee or something of that ilk . When we think about this idea of living a rich life , especially when , as more and more of us are doing , is having conversations with our clients about our pay structure , our commission structure , what I want for you , when your clients pay you , is for them to feel enriched by the experience of interaction they had with you . I want them to feel richer for it , right , I want them to feel that they not only got top-notch , top-level service and skills , but that you had care and concern for their needs as well , that the money exchange they had with you was well worth the actual dollars they paid , because you can pay someone to do a job , but you can't really pay people to care .

Speaker 1

I think we've all had the experience of going out to eat and having a waiter who's attentive and thoughtful and actually seems to want you to have a good experience , even though they may be tipped or being paid the same amount as someone who isn't so invested in your experience and is not as thoughtful or attentive to you during your meal . You may end up paying the same amount or similar for both experiences and that person may walk away with the same kind of tip , but the experience and what you felt is different , right ? The money exchange or the energy ? The money exchange may have been the same , but the energy exchange was different . So what's the feeling that you want your clients to have when they're done interacting with you ? You're building your rich life , which means , for a lot of us , time with our loved ones , time to rest , time to engage in hobbies and put our attention to more creative endeavors . Often , for a lot of us , our reward for work is often not that we want more work , we want rest and we want a break . Join me as we build a life that is both rested and rich . Thank you for joining me on this podcast . We're going to end this episode with a short meditation on what a rich life looks like to you and what experience it is that you want your clients to have .

Speaker 1

Settle in , take a deep breath in , exhale out . Do that again Deep breath in , exhale with an audible sigh . Just notice if there's tightness in your jaw . Exhale in your face , in your forehead . You're not even trying to change anything , you're just simply noticing .

Speaker 1

Now I want you to think of something that comes to your mind pretty quickly . I want you to think of something that , when you think of it , it brings a sense of warmth to your heart . It brings a sense of warmth to your heart . Maybe it's a person or an animal or a place you are . Bring that memory into your mind and paint in some of the detail in this memory . Right , paint in some of the texture and some of the finer details of this particular memory . Who was there ? What was the environment you were in ? Was it warm , cold ? Was it daytime , nighttime ? What were you wearing ? What were you wearing ? What might ? Have you been eating or drinking ? If there's food involved , could you feel warm air or cool air on your skin ? And just fill in this warm memory of the situation you were in and note the richness of this memory . Now , if I had to guess , I don't think any of you would have brought to mind thoughts of actual dollar bills . It's more so what those dollar bills allow you to do so , for example , I'll share an example of mine .

Speaker 1

For me , I thought of a quiet , still morning with my pup and my morning cup of tea . Think about for you what components in your life had to fall into place to allow you to have that warm moment that you did For me . When I'm thinking about this warm memory of me with my pup and my tea , several things had to fall in place for me to be able to have that One . I had to have the money to buy the tea , right ? So here we are talking again about the exchange of money for goods . I had to have the money and time to feed and care for my pup , to make sure he's in good health and , you know , living his best life . I had to buy and acquire the mug that I'm drinking the tea out of , and you can take this exercise quite a way , right ? So if you're thinking about being on vacation , you probably paid money to go on that vacation and a plane or a car or some method of transportation that you paid for took you there . It's the money that allowed you to have that experience , to have that warm memory in that moment .

Speaker 1

So , connecting to what the money allows us to do in order to live our rich life is where our work is right . It's also why I felt like adding that to the name of this podcast made sense . I want you to be rested , but I also want you to have a rich life , right ? I want the benefit of mindfulness practices to lead you to have a rich life , right . I want the benefit of mindfulness practices to lead you to have a life that is full and rich and textured and layered , and juicy and flavorful . So go back to that memory that you brought up of warmth and think about all those different components that allowed you to have that moment . Maybe to pay a dog sitter to dog sit your dog so you could go on a trip no-transcript again . That took money , it took time , it took attention , and those are the pieces of the rich life that drives us to do our business right .

Speaker 1

A lot of us love real estate , we love the act of helping people find homes and we like what the money can do for us . Take a couple cycles of breath to sit with this rich , warm memory and how you created that for yourself , and how many many other people unknown to you help you create that Right . You didn't design the car that took you to this vacation . I didn't design the mug that held my tea , and as much as we are individuals in our business and our lives . We're also very interdependent and our richness individually affects the collective , as does the collective right . If everyone around us is doing well , hopefully we are too , and hopefully we want that for our community and the people around us , not just the people we know and that are our family , but also our neighbors and our community outside of our door and down our street and on our block and in our city . So take a couple breaths with that On your next exhale . You can let that memory go and just return to your body , sitting here in this moment , this next breath entering your nose , the warmth of it , the temperature of it , and then just exhaling .
